Sweet Pear & Spinach Smoothie

There’s no better way to start your day than with a big glass of fresh, homemade smoothie. They’re a really quick and easy way to get a bunch of your 5-a-day in one go, and will help you feel great for the rest of the day.

I’ll confess that I’m not the biggest fan of most green smoothies, as whilst they may be healthy, I just can’t get over the taste. This smoothie however combines sweet pears, bananas and oranges with healthy, slightly earthy tasting spinach, and the result is a slightly sweet and very enjoyable drink that’s got tons and great stuff inside. Plus, it only takes 5 minutes to make, so there’s no excuse to skip it!

Ingredients (serves 2-4)

  • 2 Ripe Pears (The variety I use is Pyrus communis, but you can use whichever is available)

  • 1 Large Ripe Banana

  • 250 ml Freshly-squeezed Orange Juice (Roughly 2-3 Oranges)

  • 75g Baby Spinach

Method:

  1. Start by squeezing the oranges, and transfer the juice to a large jug.

  2. Peel the banana and add it to the jug.

  3. Cut the top and bottom off the pears and discard. Cut the remaining pear into smaller chunks and add to the jug.

  4. Thoroughly wash the spinach and add this to the jug as well.

  5. Using a hand blender (or a high-power smoothie maker if available) blend the drink until smooth. This may take several minutes to achieve the desired consistency and break up any small flakes of the spinach.

  6. Serve and enjoy!
